She describes herself as ”just a humble girl with super hero powers, trying to take over the world” Well thankfully Ms. Spears found the time to talk about her cutting edge blog . This is one interview you’ll sure to enjoy.
Where do you find inspiration for your blog?
i keep my “fashion eye” sharp by staying updated with the newest trends. i stay updated by researching the most recent collections from a plethora of designers, those that are widely known and well respected as well as those mugs that aren’t as popular in the public eye. i mostly just do my own thing though. personally, i am not a huge fan of the big designers. i’m really big on thrift shopping. fashion nowadays is heavily reliant on trends [which will die every season]. i think that the best way to keep your fashion eye sharp is to keep a strong sense of personal style.
How long have you been a blogger?
i have been blogging for about two and a half years. initially, a close friend and i started Ill-Advised Nonconformist. one day, we decided that our brains were cool enough to share with the world so we started the blog as a creative outlet to express our likes and loves. since I have been blogging alone, Ill-Advised Nonconformist is still a blog based around all things dope but fashion has taken over the majority of the blog. obviously, me and fashion have a love thing.
What blogs inspire you, what are some good blogs to watch?
whoa. it’s really hard to name just a few upcoming blogs that i’m a fan of. we’ll do it like this, the two that are open on my computer right now are seven to three which is a website for Detroit’s best work in video, photography & design seventothree.com & for tomorrow. very dope fashion. somewhat high end but it works out. http://www.f-t.com.au/blog/
items that i post on the blog are based off of my personal interest. i am a stylist, so the majority of the photographs that are posted are of collections or single looks that i dig a heap. more than likely i am in LOVE with the work of the stylist or i could just be a big fan of the photograph itself. i have a love thing for black and white photographs. those mugs make my heart smile a bit. often times when i come across a fashion blog, my interest isn’t held in the least bit. one thing that is big for most fashion blogs is the idea of posting all of the newest fashions and trends, whether or not they are actually dope. just because Gucci comes out with a new collection, i’m not going to feature their sh*t on my blog. nothing against the top designers, but as far as actual styling, it’s nothing special there for me. that’s how my blog sets me aside from others. of course, you can also find a sprinkle of art and music throughout the posts as well.
Where did your name Ill-Advised Non-Conformist come from?
Ill-Advised: performed, carried out, or done without the benefit of wise counsel or careful prior deliberation
Nonconformist: a person whose behavior or views do not conform to prevailing ideas or practices.
we decided on the name “Ill-Advised Nonconformist” because we do what we want. often times, people conform to the norms of their society and lose themselves. i’m not good with that. i’m all about breaking the rules. except the rule about drinking beer in the morning. i hear that drinking beer before noon causes your vision to be 50% off. i’m not cool with that. i won’t break that rule. a lot of the fashion that i post on my blog has a nonconformist type steez. many of the looks aren’t ensembles that you’d see a typical dude walking the streets in but the styling is mega dope. moral of the story…live your life. Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- i try to incorporate a bit of my personal steez into the blog by adding random street shots of myself. it also keeps the audience away from thinking that there’s a robot behind the screen.
- i try to keep my blog updated as much as possible, no matter what else i may have going on. i mostly do it for the monsters under my bed though.
- p.s. do epic sh*t.
Rosco’s Top 3 DON’Ts
- i try not to focus on only what is current when blogging. i love looking at old collections to see how designers have developed their style, and i sometimes try to post older looks that i dig a heap.
- don’t believe the hype when you think you’ve heard of me.
- i don’t use capital letters when typing. i hate capital letters.
Has your sense of style always been understood?
i’m not sure personal style has always been respected and i can’t say that it is now. well wait. it has always been respected, maybe just not understood. when i was younger, i would always hear the statement “oh, that’s cute. only you could pull that off.” i have no idea what that even means. i think that people rock with me nowadays though. hey, it’s not really my business if they don’t, right?
What the Master Plan for Ill-Advised Nonconformist?
the ultimate goal for my blog is to let the outsiders in on my personal sense of style. 90% of the fashion that i blog about is posted because i dig the styling a heap. i would love to get some sort of income off of blogging, but of course, i really just blog because i love to blog. nothing more, nothing less. it’s like a personal journal of all of the dope things that i’ve come across. ill-advised nonconformist is my honey love
