EDGE Elite: Shirley Eniang for Meek-n-Mild
Sweet as the name of her blog suggests, Londoner, Shirley Eniang refreshingly gives a candid view of fashion in her blog Meek-n-Mild. Almost as an outsider looking in, Shirely who has no aspirations of a career in fashion, studies mathematics and approaches fashion from an unbiased point of view. Her dream “is to become a pilot or an aeronautic engineer. I love aeroplanes and flying, loved them since I was a child (My father used to take me on trips to the airport to watch arrivals and departures of planes!).” As a result her blog seems pure and her passion for fashion as an art form and vehicle of self-expression becomes even more apparent. Ms. Meek-n-Mild admits to growing up mainly in a academic environment, but was always backed by supportive parents who encouraged her creativity. Her “mum” as Shirley refers to her is a major fashion influence in her life, she gushed that “She is a very stylish lady, and I often love to borrow some of her wardrobe gems, vintage and new…” Along with others, Eniang is inspired by other blogs “I also like looking at other fashion blogs for inspiration, especially street style blogs. The Sartorialist is one of my
favourites.” Blogging since 2009, Shirley spends a considerable amount of time each week dedicated to her craft, but says that it is all dependent on how her week goes. With a devout following of global fashion lovers, Eniang’s shares her secret to success. “I guess I don’t look at it [blogging] as a competitive field, yes there are other blogs out there who blog about similar things that I blog about, but I tend not to compare my blog to theirs. I do it for fun, for me and for the people who enjoy reading it! I’m always honest when talking about products and brands, and I’m open to learning from my readers too.” There is so much to love about Meek-n-Mild, Shirley’s love of fashion is apparent and her blog posts cover a wide area, when asked what inspires new posts, she shared that ”most times, it’s when I’m excited about something… A new pair of shoes, or a different way to wear my favourite blouse. I also get inspiration from my environment and the people around me.” Now who wouldn’t love that? Feel free to learn even more about Shirley and read on for the inside scoop on her great blog.
The Story Behind her Name (You’ll Love This)
There was a hymn my Grandmother used to sing to me when I was growing up…
“Gentle Jesus, Meek and Mild.”
I always loved having her around, and as we rarely got to see each other (We live on Two different Continents you see), I’d play or read the hymn whenever I thought of her. I started this blog randomly around the fall in 2008, Grandma was in London at the time and because I didn’t know what to call it, I decided to call it “meek and mild”. I didn’t even know what the blog was going to be about, I only started posting properly in Summer 2009.
Her Advice For Other Bloggers
Blogging is meant to be fun, don’t take it too seriously!
Shirley on Her Style
I’d say [my style is] un-committed. I style my outfits based on my mood and the way I feel. I am drawn to soft, feminine and vintage pieces. I also love keeping up to date with current fashion trends (by reading magazines and blogs), and incorporating them into my personal style.
What She Does In Her Spare Time
I love to read! I have a very huge collection of books, from Jane Austen’s Classics to Modern day Novels. I’m a bit of a nerd, so I like watching the Discovery Channel too! I’m also a big fan of Top Gear (A BBC Motor show).
Her Take on London Fashion
London is a city with a beautiful mix of antiquity and modernity. There are many people of different racial, cultural, religious and national backgrounds that live in this city and I think all of those things put together are inspiring.
