EDGE Fashion Feature: The Sachika Twins

Without a doubt, showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is single handedly one of the most coveted and stressful dreams an aspiring fashion designer can have. Quite frankly your time there will either make or break your entire career. Designers plan months in advance and pray to the fashion gods that members of the press and public will receive and understand their vision. Imagine if you will, the level of anxiety that comes along with showing for the first time. Now add in the amount of guts and pure insanity that’s required to completely change your designs and models two weeks before the show.

That is exactly what To-Tam and To-Nya, better known as The Sachika Twins, did despite fierce opposition.

The twins came up with an unimaginable idea of having well known celebrities walk in their first ever runway show. With little to no funds to compensate anyone, they pulled everything off by agreeing to make a customized dress for each celebrity; this would add even more work to an already hectic workload. But The Sachika Twins managed to brilliantly pull it off, and the rest is fashion history.

The Parisian born twins raised in Montreal, Canada are no strangers to risky decisions. One day the two asked themselves “Why are we working for other people, why are we contributing to their success? We could put all our energy into our own line and enterprises and be our own bosses…” and so they quit their soul- crushing jobs, packed up everything they owned and headed to New York. With little to no money the two worked various jobs as waitresses and even real estate agents until landing on their feet. At the time they didn’t realize the magnitude of their move and admitted that just like everyone else they were “afraid of failing, afraid of not knowing what to do”  but managed to always “focus on what we could do which is anything”.

They literally built their brand from the ground up.

Looking back they confessed that “we just came to New York with a dream, we didn’t have loans, we didn’t have investors.  People think it takes a lot of money to make money, but our case proves that you can make it with very little… it just takes work.” And working hard is exactly what has made the twins so successful. Today the bi-coastal fashion duos’ designs are worn by a host of celebrities and A-listers but their clothes are designed for women, whether they are celebrities or not. The twins refer to their designs as being made for “a modern woman who is confident. She knows what she wants, she is fierce, she is definitely active, she can be anything, she can be a housewife, she can be a CEO, she can be a teacher but she has to be confident…” With a mix of both sex appeal and elegance their clothing definitely represents their international view of fashion.

Continually growing and mastering the art of successful partnerships has always come easy for the twins; the two truly balance each other out and work together flawlessly. Each sister has a separate role; one serves as the designer and the other handles the branding and marketing. During their creative process, they “…both sit down together and think about the theme first, what we want the theme to be as a collection, is it going to be about mermaids, is this going to be about birds, is it going to be about a Vietnamese princess… we love to tell a story we love to submerge our audience into new worlds instead of just delivering fashion.” To-Tam and To-Nya’s thoughtful approach to fashion, gutsy business sense, and steadfastness sets their line apart from others and will continue to propel them forward.
