EDGE FASHION FIND: Tanisha Fulani of Folk Jewelz

It was truly a pleasure to interview Tanisha Fulani of Folk Jewelz. The full time mother and accessories designer, infuses African inspirations and nature with a dash of  ”fiyah” as she calls it in all of her work. Totally in tune with her mind, body, and spirit, Tanisha creates from her soul and shares her gift with all of her customers. It doesn’t take long to see that Fulani’s creativity is freeing for her and the must-have fashion accessories that she produces are just a bonus. Inspiring others to do what makes them happy and follow their dreams comes natural to the designer. Her go with the flow demeanor brings the best out of others and promotes artistic freedom and harmony. But enough of me telling you about Ms. Fulani, meet her for yourself. Enjoy!

EDGE:  How did Folk Jewelz come to be?

FOLK JEWELZ:  I gave birth to Folk Jewelz  during the early summer of 2010. That was the year when I decided to utilize at least one of my gifts because it helps me to survive here on this planet. I did not see a future in ignoring my [fiyah] for a fast buck or two. A creator is what I’ve always been, so starting this brand truly opened up an outlet to share all of me.

EDGE:  If you could describe your sense of style in one word what would it be and why?

FOLK JEWELZ:  Free. I allow all things to take a place in my style; however, you will always witness vibrant colors, Afrakan patterns and abstract symbols within it. There honestly aren’t any “bad” or “bum”days. When you’re true to your existence; it’s impossible to go wrong.

EDGE: How much of Africa do you feel influences your designs?

FOLK JEWELZ:  All of Africa influences my artwork because it is all in me.

EDGE: What inspires your work?

FOLK JEWELZ:  This life and all that is in it. As long as I live I am guaranteed a thought or feeling that’s worth recognition, so through my pieces I get a chance to “rap witchu”, and then you get a chance to relate.

EDGEWhat do you ultimately want for Folk Jewelz and yourself?

FOLK JEWELZ:  I wish to bring about the free and “unedited”. Now a day’s everything is too glossed up and that’s just not reality. The unknown and “uncommon” are usually feared, & not appreciated unless it is a “trend”. FolK Jewelz will continue to bring a feeling of familiarity with its vibrant colors, spoken word, cameo style and use of fabric. Anyone can relate and appreciate each gem because they express a folk culture.  I want the world to indulge in FJ, so next time you visit the site, be sure to make a purchase!

EDGE: What advice do you have for other accessories designers?

FOLK JEWELZ:  Don’t be selfish with the technique and don’t sweat the technique. In life no two are really the same…every man has their signature in life.

EDGE: Any crazy  Folk Jewelz stories?

FOLK JEWELZLet’s just say there is a spirit that follows me and enjoys being just as fly as myself because my jewelz end up missing from time to time without any explanation.

EDGE: What do you do aside from Folk Jewelz?

FOLK JEWELZ:  I am a full time mother, so really everything else is part time, even my brand but when I’m not creating pieces for Folk Jewelz, I’m usually in the kitchen cooking up a meal or two or indulging in a little digital artwork [T.Fulani Graphix].

EDGE: What would you like to leave with our readers?

FOLK JEWELZ:  Maintain a connection with the most high, live free and fully, don’t sellout and know that you are a star, so shine bright.
