Mommies.
So Mother’s Day is right around the corner and I for one MISS my mother!! I’ve been away from home for quite some time, 7 years and counting, on average I see my mother about twice a year. Every Mother’s Day I lament my inability to give her the world but always make sure she knows how much she means to me! So with Mother’s Day just a week away, I was elated to see that Jada Pinkett Smith along with her mother and daughter, Willow have decided to sit down and have an intimate conversation about motherhood, love, family and failure.
I can honestly say that up until about 3-4 years ago, I didn’t fully understand that my mother was, at the end of the day, a human being. We were two different people who didn’t get to choose one another but who were given each day to learn a little bit more about what we need from one another. Having a candid conversation with my mother is not something I would have ever thought to do in high school but now we talk every weekend about EVERYTHING…and so sitting down with her and my other favorite woman in the world, my grandmother, is something that I’d love to do. As women we carry around so many of our mothers and grandmothers hurts, disappointments, trials and errors…but we never really get to talk about it. Or we never choose to. There are countless documentaries, essays, news specials, etc…about the lives of Black women and how they are shaped by the presence or absence of our fathers…but what about our relationships with the matriarchs in our families? Losing my father undoubtedly brought me closer to my Mom but growing as a woman has helped me to fully understand the lasting effect my mothers love and generosity has had upon me…and I can only assume that she learned to be this way from my amazingly strong grandmother.
Mothers have the toughest jobs in the world.
I also came across this pretty adorable and cool video blog from our Summer 2012 feature, Reagan Gomez:
