EDGE Drama: Zoe Saldana Responds to Critics of Her Portrayal of Nina Simone
Since it was announced that Zoe Saldana would be portraying the legendary singer Nina Simone, there have been articles upon articles of disdain for the casting choice. People feel that Nina’s struggles were against an industry who did not respect her because she was the opposite of someone like Zoe (light, thin and bearing the delicate features of European descent) and to have her portray the singer was a slap in the face. The outrage was ignited further after pictures of Zoe Saldana in an afro wig, nose prosthetic and black face hit the net causing many to question: have we moved past the world that Nina once lived in at all? Recently Hip Hollywood caught up with Zoe at an Oscar party and she had this to say about her portrayal:
This is the first time we’ve heard her make comment on her “sistas and brothas” ever. She has always covered Latina magazines and seemed to stand firm on her latin roots. But as a woman of color, especially after having stepped into Nina’s life, the fact that she doesn’t understand why she would not be a fit for this role is baffling. Has she learned nothing from Nina’s struggle or is she just ignoring it? We still believe that there are actresses who could have stepped into this role and not needed to be in black face or an afro wig because they live Nina’s life daily. But more power to Zoe.
